Dreams of Rain City
A Participatory Installation by Laurel Hart and Teina Smith
If the city could dream, what visions would it see? Would it long for loving community, cozy housing, majestic nature or fantastical creatures? Would it blend latte art with cloud painted skies, and the wake of a boat on the Fraser river?
Each day, individual visual moments are captured and shared on social media sites, yet rarely do social digital spaces enable collaborative exploration into the connections within them. In “Dreams of Rain City”, social technologies and gallery installation are used to promote a collective recalling, imagining, and fantasizing.
With the help and imagination of gallery visitors, a collective urban dream is created through photographs, drawings, and prompts made by the artists, arranged by visitors on an overhead projector, and projected above a scene of rain city. Dream stills are then posted online with the hashtag #RainCityDreams. Artists’ prints of dreams of rain city will be on display as well.
